Cambridge AS Level English General Paper is widely taken by A Level students, particularly in Pakistan and other Cambridge centres, to broaden their programme beyond specialist subjects. It suits anyone who wants to argue clearly in English about current issues, and the skills transfer directly to university writing, personal statements and interviews. Unlike most A Level subjects there is no set content to memorise, so performance depends on reading habits, general knowledge and writing practice.

Assessment is two papers, both taken in the same series and each worth half the AS Level. Paper 1 is a seventy-five-minute essay, chosen from ten questions spread across economic, social, scientific, technological, literary and artistic topics, with a recommended length of 600 to 700 words. Paper 2 is a comprehension paper of one hour forty-five minutes, with two sections based on unseen material, including a short persuasive response and questions on language and inference.

Students who write fluently at O Level or IGCSE are sometimes surprised by their first marks, because the essay rewards a sustained argument supported by relevant, specific examples rather than general opinion. Comprehension questions demand close reading, inference and careful use of the writer's own words where required. Our tutors build a bank of current examples for each topic area, teach quick essay planning and practise comprehension techniques with timed unseen passages.

## What topics are in A Level English General Paper?

- Economic, historical, moral, political and social issues: Relying on vague generalisations instead of named, specific examples from different countries.
- Science, technology, environment and mathematics: Describing a technology without assessing its consequences or limitations.
- Literature, language, the arts, crafts and the media: Choosing an arts question without enough concrete examples to sustain 600 words.
- Essay planning and structure: Starting to write without a plan, so the argument drifts and the conclusion contradicts the introduction.
- Developing and evaluating an argument: Presenting one side only when the question invites discussion of 'to what extent'.
- Comprehension Section A: interpreting information and data: Copying information from the insert without explaining what it shows.
- Persuasive writing in Section A: Writing a balanced answer when the task asks for a persuasive, justified conclusion.
- Comprehension Section B: language, inference and evaluation: Explaining a phrase by repeating its key words instead of using your own.
- Accuracy, register and expression: Using informal register, such as contractions and slang, in a formal essay.

## How do you get top marks?

- Spend five to ten minutes planning the Paper 1 essay, listing arguments, counter-arguments and examples before writing.
- Choose an essay question you can support with specific, varied examples rather than the topic that seems easiest.
- Keep within the recommended 600–700 words so there is time to proofread for accuracy.
- In Paper 2, note the marks and word limits for each question and match the depth of the answer to them.
- Read widely each week, such as quality news and opinion pieces, and record useful examples by topic area.
