A Level Sociology suits students considering sociology, law, criminology, social policy, education, journalism, politics or social work. It is usually new in the sixth form, although students who took O Level or IGCSE Sociology will recognise core concepts. The subject trains students to question everyday assumptions about family, schooling and identity by examining evidence and competing theories, which gives it a useful overlap with Psychology, History and English.

Cambridge 9699 is staged: AS students sit a socialisation, identity and research methods paper and a paper on the family, each ninety minutes. The A Level adds an education paper and a longer paper offering globalisation, media and religion sections, from which students answer two essays. AQA 7192 is linear, with three two-hour papers on education with theory and methods, topics in sociology, and crime and deviance with theory and methods.

Students tend to know the theories, functionalism, Marxism, feminism and interactionism, but lose marks by describing them rather than applying them to the specific question. Research methods questions often need practical, ethical and theoretical points tied to a named method. Essays reward sustained evaluation that compares perspectives and uses contemporary evidence. Our tutors teach a clear essay plan, build a bank of studies and statistics per topic and set regular timed essays with detailed feedback.
