## Key takeaways

IGCSE equivalency in Egypt usually means eight subjects at regular (Extended) level, each at grade C or 4 or above, taken in up to five attempts in the three academic years before applying, plus faculty-specific A or AS Level subjects. That is the rule Ain Shams University publishes; always check your target university and the coordination office.

- Ain Shams University asks for eight subjects at grade C (or 4) or above, from up to five attempts in the last three academic years.
- Medicine-related faculties at Ain Shams need Biology at A Level grade D or above, or two AS subjects including Biology.
- Engineering and computing at Ain Shams need Mathematics at A Level grade D or above, or two AS subjects including Mathematics.
- New Giza University says IGCSE subjects must be from the Extended system, not Core.
- The British Council administers all Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt.

## What is IGCSE equivalency in Egypt?

IGCSE equivalency in Egypt is the set of rules that turns a British-certificate student's IGCSE, AS and A Level results into an application for an Egyptian university. Universities and the coordination office decide which subjects, levels, grades and exam attempts count, so a student can have good grades and still fall short if the subject plan is wrong.

The rules are published by universities and change from year to year. In this guide we quote the rules exactly as Ain Shams University and New Giza University publish them, as clear examples. Use them to plan, then check the current rules for each university your child is considering.

| Rule (as published) | What it says | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Number of subjects | Eight subjects at regular level | [Ain Shams University](https://www.asu.edu.eg/1166/page) |
| Minimum grade | C, or 4 on the 9–1 scale, in each counted subject | Ain Shams University |
| Attempts | Chosen from up to five attempts in the last three academic years before applying | Ain Shams University |
| Tier | IGCSE subjects from the Extended system, not Core | [New Giza University (PDF)](https://ngu.edu.eg/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Spring-2026-Entrance-Requirements.pdf) |
| Grade 9 | Subjects must be taken within the last three years, not in Grade 9 | New Giza University |

## How many IGCSE subjects do you need?

Most Egyptian universities ask British-certificate students for eight subjects. Ain Shams University's published rules require eight subjects at regular level, each with a grade of at least C or 4, including the qualifying subjects for the faculty the student wants to join.

Faculties then add their own AS or A Level requirements, shown below, so check how your target university counts those against the eight. Students who want to keep options open often take more than eight IGCSEs, so that a weaker grade can be left out.

## Which A Level or AS subjects do medicine and engineering need?

Medicine and engineering need a specific subject at A Level, or two AS subjects. Ain Shams University publishes these rules:

| Faculty group (Ain Shams University) | Requirement |
| --- | --- |
| Medicine-related: pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy, veterinary medicine, nursing | Biology at A Level, grade D or above, **or** two AS subjects, one of them Biology and the other Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, each grade D or above |
| Engineering, computers and information, urban planning, architecture | Mathematics at A Level, grade D or above, **or** two AS subjects, one of them Mathematics and the other Chemistry, Physics or Accounting, each grade D or above |

If your child is still deciding between medicine and engineering, taking AS Biology and AS Mathematics, plus Chemistry, keeps both routes open for longer. Our [A Level tutors](https://www.gradeupinternational.com/a-level) teach Cambridge and Edexcel AS and A Level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths.

## Does Core or Extended matter?

Yes. New Giza University's Spring 2026 entrance requirements state that IGCSE subjects should be from the Extended system, not the Core system, and Ain Shams University counts subjects at regular level. A Core entry in Maths or a science can therefore cost a student a counted subject, even with a good grade.

Cambridge IGCSE Core papers also cap the grade: Core candidates can only reach grade C. Ask the school which tier your child is entered for in every tiered subject at the start of Grade 10, and choose Extended (or Edexcel Higher) wherever the student can manage it.

## How do the five attempts and three years work?

Ain Shams University counts subjects chosen from up to five exam attempts made in the last three academic years before the application. New Giza University adds that subjects must be taken within the last three years, not in Grade 9. In practice, IGCSEs sat too early, or spread over too many series, may not count.

> **Plan your series before you register:** Write down every series your child will sit, from Grade 10 to the end of school, before the first entry. Count the attempts and check each one falls inside the three-year window. Resits are useful, but each extra series uses up an attempt.

The British Council administers all Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt under a [Memorandum of Understanding](https://www.britishcouncil.org.eg/en/exam/igcse-school/choosing/relationship-ministry-education) with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education. Schools teach the syllabuses and enter students; check registration dates with the school or the British Council.

## How does the American diploma compare?

American-diploma students are judged on school subjects plus a standardised test instead. Ain Shams University asks for at least eight subjects from Grades 11 and 12, a minimum of 1050 on the SAT I or equivalent for government colleges, and at least 1100 on EST II or ACT II in the required subjects for medical and engineering faculties. SAT scores must be sent to the university's code, 7437.

If your child is choosing between the two systems, the British route rewards depth in eight exam subjects, while the American route rewards steady school grades plus one big test. Our [online tutors in Egypt](https://www.gradeupinternational.com/online-tuition/egypt) teach both.

## A year-by-year plan

A plan many families find workable:

| School year | Focus |
| --- | --- |
| Grade 9 | Build foundations; avoid relying on sittings that will fall outside the three-year window |
| Grade 10 | First IGCSE sittings in Extended tier; choose which eight subjects you are aiming to count |
| Grade 11 | Remaining IGCSEs and any resits; start AS subjects for the target faculty |
| Grade 12 | AS or A Level in Biology or Mathematics as the faculty requires; final resits within the five-attempt limit |

## Frequently asked questions

### How many IGCSE subjects are needed for equivalency in Egypt?

Most Egyptian universities ask British-certificate students for eight subjects. Ain Shams University's published rules require eight subjects at regular level, each at grade C or 4 or above, chosen from up to five exam attempts in the three academic years before applying, including the qualifying subjects for the chosen faculty.

### What A Level subjects do I need for medicine in Egypt?

For medicine-related faculties such as pharmacy, dentistry and physiotherapy, Ain Shams University asks for Biology at A Level with grade D or above, or two AS Level subjects, one of them Biology and the other Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics, each at grade D or above. Check your target university's current rules each year.

### Does IGCSE Core count for equivalency in Egypt?

Core-tier entries are risky. Ain Shams University counts subjects at regular level, and New Giza University's Spring 2026 entrance requirements state that IGCSE subjects should be from the Extended system, not the Core system. Ask the school which tier your child is entered for in every subject.

### Do grade 9 IGCSE results count in Egypt?

Usually not. Ain Shams University counts attempts from the last three academic years before applying, and New Giza University states that subjects taken in Grade 9 do not count. Plan the main IGCSE sittings in Grade 10 and Grade 11, with AS or A Level subjects in the final years.

### Who administers IGCSE exams in Egypt?

The British Council administers all Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education. Its role is administrative: schools teach the syllabuses and enter their students.
