IGCSE Additional Mathematics is aimed at strong mathematicians, usually students taking or already holding Extended Mathematics 0580, who want to stretch themselves before A Level or the IB Diploma. Some schools teach it alongside 0580, while others offer it after an early 0580 entry. Its fourteen topics push well beyond the main course into function notation, logarithms and exponentials, radians, binomial expansions and both differentiation and integration.

Assessment consists of two 2-hour papers, each worth 80 marks and half of the grade. Paper 1 bans calculators, so surds, exact values and fraction work must be secure by hand; Paper 2 requires a scientific calculator. Unlike 0580, there is no Core tier: every candidate sits the same papers and can be graded A* to E. The content closely matches Cambridge O Level Additional Mathematics, so students can widen their practice with those past papers too.

Students typically find trigonometric identities, kinematics and connected rates of change in calculus, and converting relationships into straight-line form the most demanding parts. Questions are long, so organisation matters: a tidy layout helps the student track their own reasoning. Additional Maths gives a real head start on A Level Pure Mathematics and on IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, particularly in calculus, logarithms and trigonometry, which those courses introduce quickly.

## How is IGCSE Additional Mathematics examined?

## What topics are in IGCSE Additional Mathematics?

- Functions: Composing functions in the wrong order, such as working out gf(x) when fg(x) was asked.
- Quadratic functions: Using the discriminant with the wrong inequality for 'meets', 'touches' or 'does not meet'.
- Factors of polynomials: Sign slips when substituting into the remainder theorem, leading to a wrong unknown coefficient.
- Equations, inequalities and graphs: Losing one branch when solving modulus inequalities and drawing cubic sketches without intercepts.
- Simultaneous equations: Producing correct x values but matching them with the wrong y values.
- Logarithmic and exponential functions: Dividing logarithms incorrectly and forgetting that ln and e^x are inverse functions.
- Straight-line graphs: Choosing the wrong variables for the axes when turning a non-linear relationship into a straight line.
- Coordinate geometry of the circle: Arithmetic errors rewriting a circle equation into centre–radius form.
- Circular measure: Forgetting the straight edges when asked for the perimeter of a sector or segment.
- Trigonometry: Dividing through by a trigonometric function and losing solutions, and sketching graphs with wrong amplitude or period.
- Permutations and combinations: Double-counting arrangements when a restriction applies to more than one item.
- Series: Misidentifying the required term in a binomial expansion, and applying the sum to infinity when the ratio is too large.
- Vectors in two dimensions: Mixing position vectors with displacement vectors, and errors in velocity-vector problems.
- Calculus: Integration slips with negative or fractional powers, and wrong signs in kinematics problems.

## How do you get top marks?

- Build non-calculator fluency with surds, exact trigonometric values and indices before attempting Paper 1 past papers.
- Keep answers exact (surds, π, logarithmic forms) whenever a question asks for an exact value.
- Treat 'show that' items as proofs: every line of algebra must be visible, because the result is already given.
- Use radians in calculus and circular measure unless the question states degrees.
- Sketch a graph over the given interval for trigonometric equations to make sure no solution is missed.
- Allow about one and a half minutes per mark and leave time to recheck long calculus questions.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is IGCSE Additional Maths worth taking?

IGCSE Additional Maths is worth taking for students who are confident in Extended Mathematics and plan to study A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, engineering or IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches. It introduces calculus and logarithms early, which eases the transition to sixth form. Students who find 0580 a struggle may benefit more from consolidating core maths first.

### How many papers are in IGCSE Additional Maths 0606?

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 has two papers, each lasting 2 hours, worth 80 marks and counting for 50%. Calculators are banned in Paper 1, while Paper 2 cannot be done without a scientific calculator. All candidates sit the same papers, because there is no Core or Extended tier, and grades run from A* to E.

### Is IGCSE Additional Maths harder than IGCSE Maths?

Yes, IGCSE Additional Maths is harder than IGCSE Mathematics 0580, because it covers more abstract topics such as logarithms, trigonometric identities and calculus, and its questions are longer. Students who already find Extended 0580 comfortable usually adapt well. Regular practice with multi-step problems is the key to the jump.

### Do I need Additional Maths for A Level Maths or IB Maths AA?

Additional Maths is not required for A Level Mathematics or IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, but it gives a clear head start. Students who skip it meet calculus, logarithms and radians for the first time in sixth form. Those who take it can spend more of their first term on new ideas and exam technique.

### Is IGCSE Additional Maths the same as O Level Additional Maths?

IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 and O Level Additional Mathematics 4037 share the same fourteen topics and the same two-paper structure. They are separate qualifications, awarded under the IGCSE and O Level names respectively. Past papers from either are useful practice for both, as long as students follow their own syllabus document.

### What topics are in IGCSE Additional Maths 0606?

IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 covers fourteen topics: functions; quadratic functions; factors of polynomials; equations, inequalities and graphs; simultaneous equations; logarithmic and exponential functions; straight-line graphs; circle geometry; circular measure; trigonometry; permutations and combinations; series; vectors; and calculus, including kinematics. Every topic can appear on either paper.
