IGCSE Economics attracts students who follow the news, enjoy debate and may be considering economics, finance, business, law or politics later on. In Gulf schools it is often taken alongside Business Studies and Mathematics. Cambridge 0455 is organised into six sections, from the basic economic problem to international trade and globalisation, while Edexcel 4EC1 divides content into microeconomics and business economics, and macroeconomics and the global economy, with one paper on each.

From 2027, Cambridge 0455 has a 1-hour multiple-choice paper of 40 questions (30%) and a 2-hour structured paper of 80 marks (70%), with a compulsory six-part question in Section A and three questions from four in Section B; the 2026 series used a shorter Paper 1 and longer Paper 2. Edexcel 4EC1 has two 1 hour 30 minute papers of 80 marks each, worth 50%, each with four compulsory 20-mark questions mixing multiple-choice, short-answer, data and open-ended items.

Students tend to struggle with drawing and explaining diagrams accurately, using data from the case material, and writing balanced evaluations that end in a justified judgement. Macroeconomic policy questions often expose confusion between fiscal, monetary and supply-side measures. IGCSE Economics prepares students well for A Level Economics and IB Economics, both of which expect fluent use of diagrams and structured evaluation from the first weeks.

## What topics are in IGCSE Economics?

- The basic economic problem and opportunity cost: Drawing production possibility curves without labelling the axes or explaining the movement shown.
- Demand, supply and market equilibrium: Shifting the wrong curve when a non-price factor changes.
- Elasticity of demand and supply: Not linking price elasticity to total revenue in pricing decisions.
- Market failure, externalities and government intervention: Describing a tax or subsidy without explaining how it corrects the market failure.
- Banks, households, workers and trade unions: Explaining wage differences with one factor and no supporting analysis.
- Firms: production, costs, revenue and competition: Confusing productivity with total production and mixing up economies and diseconomies of scale.
- Macroeconomic objectives and policies: Assigning interest rates to fiscal policy and ignoring time lags and conflicts.
- Economic development, population and living standards: Comparing countries with one indicator only and no explanation.
- International trade, exchange rates and globalisation: Reversing the effects of appreciation or depreciation on exports and imports.

## How do you get top marks?

- Draw diagrams large, fully labelled and with arrows for shifts, then explain them in the text.
- Use the figures and context in data questions explicitly; generic answers cap the marks available.
- Structure evaluation with arguments on both sides and a final judgement that depends on stated conditions.
- For Edexcel, practise the 20-mark question format so you can pace multiple-choice, short and extended parts within each.
- For Cambridge Paper 1, work through each option methodically rather than answering on instinct.
- Learn definitions precisely; short 'define' and 'identify' items should be fast, reliable marks.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many papers are there in IGCSE Economics?

IGCSE Economics has two papers with both main boards. Cambridge 0455 (from 2027) has a 1-hour multiple-choice paper worth 30% and a 2-hour structured paper worth 70%. Edexcel 4EC1 has two 1 hour 30 minute papers of 80 marks, one on microeconomics and business economics and one on macroeconomics and the global economy.

### Is IGCSE Economics hard?

IGCSE Economics is moderately demanding: the concepts are accessible, but top marks need accurate diagrams, clear analysis and balanced evaluation. Students who only memorise definitions often struggle with the longer questions. Regular practice with past papers and feedback on structure makes the subject far more manageable.

### Has IGCSE Economics 0455 changed for 2027?

Yes, Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 has a new syllabus from 2027. Paper 1 becomes 1 hour with 40 multiple-choice questions, and Paper 2 becomes 2 hours with 80 marks, split into a compulsory Section A question and three Section B questions from four. The six content sections keep the same headings.

### What topics are in IGCSE Economics?

Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 covers six sections: the basic economic problem; the allocation of resources; microeconomic decision makers; government and the macroeconomy; economic development; and international trade and globalisation. Edexcel 4EC1 covers similar ground across microeconomics and business economics, and macroeconomics and the global economy.

### Should I take IGCSE Economics or Business Studies?

Pick IGCSE Economics if you enjoy theory, diagrams and questions about markets, government and the wider economy; pick Business Studies if you prefer practical case studies about how firms make decisions. Both lead to A Level or IB economics and business courses, and many students take both because they complement each other.

### How can I get an A* or a 9 in IGCSE Economics?

Students who achieve an A* or 9 in IGCSE Economics combine precise definitions, accurate diagrams and developed chains of analysis with justified evaluation. Timed practice using the current paper format, checked against mark schemes, is essential. Our tutors focus on turning description into analysis, but we never promise grades.
