IGCSE Physics is a popular choice in Gulf and UK international schools for students considering engineering, the physical sciences or any route that keeps Physics open at A Level or IB. Cambridge 0625 has six topic areas, with Supplement content added for the Extended tier, while Edexcel 4PH1 is organised into eight topics, from forces and motion to astrophysics, with bold content that appears only on its second paper. Knowing which content is tested where saves revision time.

Cambridge Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (multiple choice, 45 minutes, 40 marks, 30%), Paper 4 (theory, 1 hour 15 minutes, 80 marks, 50%) and a practical option worth 20%: Paper 5, a practical test, or Paper 6, Alternative to Practical. Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3 instead, with grade C as the highest available. Edexcel uses two untiered papers: Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks, 61.1%) and Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks, 38.9%).

Students find the quantitative parts hardest: rearranging equations, unit conversions and multi-step problems on momentum, pressure, specific heat capacity and electrical power. Explaining phenomena such as electromagnetic induction or gas behaviour in precise language is a second weak area. Edexcel lists the physics relationships students need in an appendix of its specification, which is worth learning early. IGCSE Physics leads into A Level Physics or IB Physics, where mechanics and electricity are extended with more mathematics.

## What topics are in IGCSE Physics?

- Motion: Calculating acceleration from a speed–time graph using a single point instead of the gradient.
- Mass, weight and density: Forgetting to subtract the mass of the empty container when finding the density of a liquid.
- Forces, momentum and pressure: Leaving out direction in momentum and impulse answers, and using the wrong area in pressure calculations.
- Energy, work, power and energy resources: Comparing energy resources without stating whether they are renewable, reliable or polluting.
- Thermal physics: Explaining gas pressure without collisions with the container walls.
- Waves, light, the electromagnetic spectrum and sound: Ordering the electromagnetic spectrum incorrectly and confusing critical angle with angle of refraction.
- Electricity and circuits: Misusing V = IR across components in parallel and omitting units in power and energy answers.
- Magnetism and electromagnetic effects: Describing transformer action without the changing current in the primary coil.
- Nuclear physics: Mixing up alpha, beta and gamma properties and their effects on nuclei.
- Space physics: Vague descriptions of orbital motion and of the evidence for the expanding universe.

## How do you get top marks?

- Learn which content is Supplement (Cambridge) or bold (Edexcel) so you revise exactly what your paper can test.
- In multiple-choice papers, cover the options, solve the problem, then find the match; this avoids distractors built on common slips.
- Show equation, substitution, answer and unit for every calculation; partial credit depends on visible steps.
- For Paper 6 or practical-based questions, describe how to reduce errors with specific actions, such as repeating readings and averaging.
- Draw graphs across at least half the grid, with labelled axes and units, and a smooth best-fit line or curve.
- Answer 'explain' questions with physics reasons, not just descriptions of what happens.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between Core and Extended IGCSE Physics?

Core IGCSE Physics covers the Core syllabus content only and leads to grades C to G, while Extended adds Supplement content and allows grades A* to G. Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3; Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4. Both tiers also take a practical paper, either Paper 5 or Paper 6.

### How many papers are there in IGCSE Physics 0625?

Each Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 candidate sits three papers: a 45-minute multiple-choice paper (30%), a 1 hour 15 minute theory paper (50%) and a practical paper worth 20%. Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4, Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3, and everyone takes either Paper 5 or Paper 6.

### Is IGCSE Physics hard?

IGCSE Physics is one of the more demanding IGCSE sciences because it combines concepts, calculations and precise explanations. Students who are comfortable with algebra and practise problems regularly generally find it manageable. Electricity, electromagnetism and multi-step calculations cause the most difficulty, so they deserve extra practice time.

### What is Paper 6 in IGCSE Physics?

Paper 6 in Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 is the Alternative to Practical, a 1-hour written paper worth 40 marks and 20% of the grade. It tests practical skills on paper, including taking readings, tabulating data, drawing graphs, evaluating methods and planning experiments. It is taken instead of Paper 5, the laboratory practical test.

### Is Edexcel IGCSE Physics different from Cambridge IGCSE Physics?

Yes, Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1 and Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 differ in structure. Edexcel has two untiered written papers (2 hours and 1 hour 15 minutes) graded 9 to 1, while Cambridge is tiered with multiple-choice, theory and practical papers graded A* to G. Much of the physics content overlaps.

### How can I get an A* or a 9 in IGCSE Physics?

Students who achieve an A* or 9 in IGCSE Physics know every definition and equation, set out calculations clearly and practise past papers under timed conditions. Reviewing mark schemes shows the exact wording that earns credit in explanations. Our tutors focus on each student's weakest topics, though we never promise a specific grade.
