Business Studies appeals to students who want a practical subject linked to the real world, whether they plan to study commerce, management, economics or law, or to join a family business. It explains how businesses are set up, organised, financed and marketed, and how outside forces affect them. From June 2027 Cambridge has renamed the subject Business and changed its code from 7115 to 7081, keeping the same six content sections with some refreshed subtopics.

Both the outgoing and the new syllabus use two papers of 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks, each worth 50%. Paper 1 contains four compulsory questions mixing short answers with structured data response. Paper 2 is built around a case study supplied as an insert, with four compulsory questions that require students to apply ideas to that business and make justified recommendations. Calculations such as break-even and cash flow may appear on either paper.

The biggest difference between a middle and a top grade is application. Students often know definitions but write generic answers that could apply to any firm, or recommend options without weighing them up. Finance questions, especially cash-flow forecasts, break-even and interpreting statements, also cost marks. The subject leads directly to A Level Business and supports A Level Economics and Accounting, where evaluation and data interpretation are developed further.

## What topics are in O Level Business Studies?

- Understanding business activity: Confusing economic sectors and types of business organisation, especially limited and unlimited liability.
- Business objectives and stakeholders: Not explaining how different stakeholder objectives conflict in the case-study business.
- People in business: Naming motivation methods without applying them to the workers in the scenario.
- Marketing, market research and the marketing mix: Recommending a marketing mix without linking it to the target market described.
- Operations management, quality and location: Mixing up methods of production and not justifying a location decision with evidence.
- Costs, scale of production and break-even: Calculation slips in break-even and margin of safety, and unlabelled break-even charts.
- Financial information and decisions: Errors completing cash-flow forecasts and confusing profit with cash.
- External influences on business activity: Describing an economic change without explaining its specific effect on the business.

## How do you get top marks?

- Use the business name, products and figures from the case study in every answer beyond simple definitions.
- For 'justify' or 'recommend' questions, compare at least two options and end with a clear decision and reason.
- Show all workings in calculations and state units such as currency or percentages.
- Match depth to marks: a 2-mark 'identify' needs no explanation, while a longer 'justify' needs a supported argument.
- Read the whole case-study insert before starting Paper 2 and annotate useful data for each question.
- Learn the formulas listed in the syllabus, such as break-even and margin of safety, until you can apply them quickly.

Yes, Cambridge has replaced O Level Business Studies 7115 with O Level Business 7081, with first assessment in June 2027. The title now matches A Level Business 9609. ### How many papers are there in O Level Business Studies?

O Level Business has two papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes long, worth 80 marks and 50% of the grade. Paper 1 is Short Answer and Data Response, with four compulsory questions. Paper 2 is a Case Study, with four compulsory questions based on a business described in an insert. This applies to both 7115 and the new 7081.

### Is O Level Business Studies easy?

O Level Business Studies is often seen as approachable because the ideas are familiar from everyday life, but high grades are not easy. Students who practise application and evaluation regularly find the subject rewarding.

### What is the case study paper in O Level Business?

The case study paper is Paper 2 of O Level Business, a 1 hour 30 minute paper worth 80 marks and 50% of the grade. ### Can I take Business Studies and Accounting together at O Level?

Yes, O Level Business and O Level Accounting can be taken together, and the combination works well. Accounting provides the detailed financial skills, while Business places them in a wider management context. Together they suit students heading for commerce, finance, chartered accountancy or business degrees.

### How can I get an A* in O Level Business Studies?

Students who reach an A* in O Level Business consistently apply concepts to the case, analyse consequences and make justified recommendations. Accurate calculations and knowing the syllabus formulas matter too. Timed practice with past papers, reviewed against mark schemes, sharpens all of this. Our tutors coach these skills, but we do not promise grades.
