O Level Sociology suits curious students who like discussing how society works and who may be heading towards law, psychology, journalism, social work or the social sciences. It examines how people learn their identity, how inequality is created and challenged, and how families, schools and the justice system shape lives. The syllabus has six sections: research methods; identity; social stratification and inequality; family; education; and crime, deviance and social control.

There are two papers of equal weight, each worth 80 marks. Paper 1, Research Methods, Identity and Inequality, lasts 2 hours: students answer a compulsory research methods question that includes data response, then choose between a question on identity and one on inequality. Paper 2, Family, Education and Crime, lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, and students answer two structured questions from a choice of three. Questions build from short definitions to longer evaluative answers.

Students commonly lose marks by writing from personal opinion rather than sociological evidence, by naming a concept without explaining it, and by giving one-sided answers to evaluation questions. Research methods also trip students up: they must judge reliability, validity, representativeness and ethics in a given study. O Level Sociology is a natural step to A Level Sociology, and its concepts and evaluative writing also help with A Level Psychology and English General Paper.

## What topics are in O Level Sociology?

- Research methods: approaches and types of data: Confusing reliability with validity, and positivist with interpretivist approaches.
- Research methods: investigating society: Describing a method without evaluating its strengths and limitations for the topic given.
- Identity: socialisation and social control: Listing agencies of socialisation without explaining how each shapes identity.
- Influences on social identity: Generalising about groups without sociological evidence or examples.
- Social stratification and inequality: Treating class, gender and ethnic inequalities as identical without distinguishing their causes.
- Family: Describing family types without linking them to the functions or changing patterns the question asks about.
- Education: Explaining differences in achievement with a single factor and ignoring in-school and out-of-school influences.
- Crime, deviance and social control: Confusing crime with deviance and using crime statistics uncritically.

## How do you get top marks?

- Define key concepts precisely in short-answer parts; vague definitions rarely earn full marks.
- In the research methods question, apply reliability, validity, representativeness and ethics directly to the study described.
- Support every argument with a study, theory, example or statistic rather than personal opinion.
- For evaluation questions, present arguments for and against and finish with a clear, reasoned judgement.
- Use part of Paper 1's 2 hours to plan longer answers; organised paragraphs score better than lists.
- Before committing in Paper 2, check that you can answer every part of the two questions you choose.
