How do schools and exams work in Egypt?
Alongside the national Thanaweya Amma, many families in Egypt choose international schools that teach the British curriculum (IGCSE, AS and A Level), the American diploma (with SAT or EST scores and AP courses) or the IB. Under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, the British Council administers all Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt.
University entry rules for international certificates are strict and specific. Ain Shams University's published rules, for example, ask British-certificate students for eight subjects at grade C (or 4) or above, chosen from up to five exam attempts in the three academic years before applying, and set minimum SAT, EST or ACT scores for American-diploma students. Choosing the right subjects and levels early matters as much as the grades.
We teach online only, matching each student with a tutor who knows their board and syllabus code. Classes run in Egypt time after school and at weekends, and fees are shown in US dollars.
Sitting exams
The British Council administers Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt under its Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education; schools prepare and enter their students. American-diploma students sit the SAT, the ACT or the Egyptian Scholastic Test (EST), depending on what their target universities accept, and IB students sit exams at their IB World School. Always check the current registration rules with your school or the British Council.
School calendar
International schools in Egypt usually run from September to June, with Cambridge and Edexcel exams in May/June and a smaller October/November series. Egypt uses summer time (UTC+3) from late April to late October, so class times shift by an hour against Pakistan, which does not change its clocks. During Ramadan, families usually move lessons to after iftar.
