Which IGCSE boards do schools in Egypt use?

  • Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge International Education)

The British Council is Cambridge's exam partner in Egypt. Most syllabuses are graded A* to G, with Core and Extended routes in subjects such as Mathematics (0580) and the sciences. Universities in Egypt count subjects at regular (Extended) level, so check the tier before entries are made.

  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Graded 9 to 1, with Foundation and Higher tiers in subjects such as Mathematics A (4MA1). Egyptian university rules accept a grade 4 as the equivalent of a C, as Ain Shams University's published rules show.

  • OxfordAQA International GCSE

Also administered by the British Council in Egypt. Some schools use OxfordAQA for selected subjects, so confirm the board on the statement of entry before choosing a tutor.

May/June seriesThe main series for schools in Egypt. Cambridge IGCSE results for the June series come out in August; June 2026 results were released on 18 August 2026.
October/November seriesUsed for resits and to spread subjects over more sessions. Cambridge IGCSE results for November 2026 are due on 14 January 2027. Egyptian equivalency rules limit how many attempts count, so plan resits carefully.

Where do students in Egypt sit IGCSE exams?

Under its Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, the British Council administers all Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA school exams in Egypt. Its role is administrative; schools prepare and enter students.

Students register through their school or, where allowed, through the British Council's registration process. Check the British Council Egypt website for current registration dates and fees.

University equivalency rules count only certain subjects, levels, grades and attempts. Ain Shams University, for example, counts eight subjects at regular level from up to five attempts in the last three academic years, so plan the whole IGCSE and AS programme with this in mind.

How many IGCSE subjects do you need for university in Egypt?

Egyptian universities usually ask British-certificate students for eight subjects. Ain Shams University's published rules, for example, require eight subjects at regular level, each at grade C or 4 or above, chosen from up to five exam attempts in the three academic years before applying, and including the qualifying subjects for the chosen faculty.

Medicine-related faculties at Ain Shams also require Biology at A Level grade D or above, or two AS subjects including Biology plus Chemistry, Physics or Maths. Engineering and computing need Mathematics at A Level, or two AS subjects including Mathematics. Rules change, so always check your target university and the coordination office before choosing subjects.

Core or Extended: why the IGCSE tier matters in Egypt

Ain Shams University counts subjects at regular level, and New Giza University's Spring 2026 entrance requirements state that IGCSE subjects should be from the Extended, not the Core, system. A Core Maths entry may not count the way a family expects. Ask the school which tier your child is entered for in each subject, and plan tutoring to support the Extended papers.
