Which IGCSE boards do schools in the UK use?

  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Graded 9 to 1, like UK GCSEs, with Foundation and Higher tiers in subjects such as Mathematics A (4MA1). Many subjects are assessed by written exams only, which suits private candidates, with a main May/June series and a smaller November series.

  • Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge International Education)

Graded A* to G on most syllabuses (some 9 to 1), with Core and Extended routes. Cambridge says private candidates should find a centre that accepts them and register and pay through that centre.

When are IGCSE exams for students in the UK?

Full calendar by board on our exam dates page.
SessionWhat applies in the UK
May/June seriesThe main series for both boards. Centres set their own internal entry deadlines, often months earlier, so contact a centre in the autumn before.
November seriesCambridge runs a full October/November series and Pearson a smaller November series, useful for resits or spreading subjects. Cambridge IGCSE results for November 2026 are due on 14 January 2027.

Where do students in the UK sit IGCSE exams?

Private candidates in the UK take exams at an approved school or college without being enrolled there. JCQ's search tool lists around 190 centres that have confirmed they accept private candidates, and the list is updated each December or January.

Each centre sets its own fees, internal deadlines and required information, and you make your entries through the centre. Arrange any access arrangements, such as extra time, with the centre when you enter.

For subjects with coursework, practicals or speaking components, check whether the centre will accept and submit that work for a private candidate before you choose the syllabus.

Why do home-educated students in the UK choose IGCSE?

Home-educated students in the UK take exams as private candidates at an approved centre, and JCQ notes that some GCSE subjects include non-exam assessment that a centre must agree to supervise. Many International GCSE and IGCSE syllabuses, such as Edexcel 4MA1 and Cambridge 0580 Mathematics, are assessed by written papers only, which makes them simpler for private candidates to enter.

Our tutors teach the whole course, from the first topic to full past papers, so a home-educated student can follow a structured two-year plan in each subject.

Can home-educated students study online during the school day?

Yes. Because our tutors are four or five hours ahead of the UK, morning and early-afternoon UK slots are available, which suits home-educated students who prefer to study in the day. We can build a weekly timetable across several IGCSE subjects.

Which IGCSE subjects do we teach students in the UK?
